Over the last few years, I’ve witnessed something incredible. Friends are starting up businesses in a variety of industries: food, health, wellness, and beyond. Seeing them kick off these passions and document their progress on social media has been exciting. I’m so proud of them! I know the resolve and dedication it takes to start a small business.
As someone who grew up in a family that ran a small business, I deeply understand the challenges that come with building and sustaining one. Gaining traction, especially generating consistent sales, can feel daunting. It’s tough when appointments aren’t filling up or when your handmade crafts aren’t selling as quickly as you’d hoped.
Sales Funnel
Here’s the most important advice I can give: the sales funnel should be your north star. I’ve shared this with small business owners and non-profits, and reminded many Fortune 100 clients during my time at Google. To succeed, your marketing and advertising strategies must focus on that funnel! Remember, you can’t jump straight to sales if people aren’t aware of your product or service in the first place. Awareness is key! How will customers know what you’re selling if you don’t put it out there for them to find?
Here’s a powerful stat to consider: social media is the top product discovery platform for consumers aged 18 to 44 (HubSpot State of Marketing Report, 2023). And social media ad campaigns don’t have to break the bank. You can run social media (or Google Search) campaigns for dollars! You can start with as little as $15, $25, or $100. This is one of my favorite tips for new business owners: small investments in ads can go a long way in driving awareness, nurturing interest, and, ultimately, landing sales.
